An Introduction to Online Fraud

Internet fraud is a current epidemic that rakes in billions of dollars a year (US$7.1 billion in 2007 according to the Centre of American Progress). The proliferation of Internet usage in the late 1990s made it an attractive medium for fraud by enabling a worldwide reach in the cover of anonymity. The purpose of this website is to provide a web resource for online fraud prevention, supported by knowledge engendered from applied research.

Online fraud is a problem that threatens to grow with the increasing reach and adoption of the Internet, while being responsible for stifling the growth of Internet business. E.g. popular innovations such as Google, PayPal, and eBay are vehicles for fraud.

Watch out of Miss Ralisa DURU, female, 21, so called daughter of a late traditional king and student in the University of Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Asking for assistance to transfer founds from the US$8.5 million paid by Shell petroleum development company (S.P.D.C) to her late father. Many fraudulous mails like this one are received everyday here in Africa. Beware!

New themes of fraud include Swine flu medication (Tamiflu etc) for sale online, and emails saying you have been defrauded and ask you to reply to follow it up to seek recourse, ultimately leading to identity or credit card fraud. The saving grace is that fraudsters are mostly unable create emails that look normal, usually coming up with suspect grammar, which can be quite entertaining!

For business owners: Look out for scams that involve a prospective customer who asks you to charge a (stolen) credit card and then somehow asks for a cash refund. Rule is to never refund a credit card transaction by other means such as cash, check, or bank transfers.

As you may be aware, a recent bushfire disaster in Victoria, Australia saw over a hundred lives lost. At this time there will be many charitable organisations seeking donations. You are advised to verify the authenticity of such charities before donating as there have been previous scams exploiting such situations. Fraudsters are never too dastardly.

Be careful with scam emails as they may know your name. Never reply to these emails to be safe. If its official they will find some other way to reach you. If you do get scammed make sure you report it to he police immediately as delaying it allows them to get away.
